Puss in Boots

After a miller died, his older sons got his mill and donkey. His youngest son got only Puss, their orange cat. The young miller feared they would have no home.
Puss asked for a pouch and red boots. The miller kindly gave him both. “Trust me. I have a plan!” Puss promised.
To earn the king’s friendship, Puss filled his pouch with carrots. A hungry rabbit hopped inside, and Puss carefully closed it.
Puss carried the calm rabbit to the palace garden. “A gift from my kind master, the young miller,” he said. The king gave the rabbit a safe home.
For weeks, Puss brought more animals to the palace garden. Then he learned the royal family would ride beside the river. “Trust me. I have a plan!” he said.
Puss wanted the king to meet his kind master. The young miller waded into the river, soaking his clothes. When the carriage arrived, Puss called, “Please help him get dry!”
The king remembered Puss’s gifts and offered dry royal clothes. The miller thanked him, dressed in blue and gold. The princess welcomed them both into the carriage.
Far ahead of the carriage, Puss met friendly workers near a castle. “If my master earns that castle, will you welcome him?” he asked. “We will!” the workers cheered.
Puss knocked, and a friendly ogre opened the castle door. He was tired of his enormous castle. “Surprise me, and your master may have it!” he promised.
“Can you become tiny?” asked Puss. The ogre became a mouse, and Puss pounced playfully nearby. “You surprised me, so the castle is your master’s!” laughed the mouse.
The ogre chose to stay a mouse and explore the meadows. At the castle gate, the miller and Puss welcomed the king and princess to the miller’s new home.
At supper, Puss and the miller shared their whole story. They explained every trick and promise. The king and princess thanked them for telling the truth.
Over many weeks, the miller and princess became dear friends. One evening, they walked through the quiet castle garden. Under lavender skies, they chose to marry.
On their wedding day, the castle glowed warmly. They shared supper with the king and Puss. Everyone felt safe and welcome.
That night, Puss placed his boots beside the hearth. He curled into a warm ball and closed his eyes. Clever plans work best with a kind heart.
