Gilda and the Golden Eggs
scroll gently to begin ↓
On a small farm, Ben and Mara cared for Gilda, their goose. One dawn, Gilda settled beside an empty straw nest.
When Ben checked the nest, a golden egg gleamed inside. “One golden egg, warm and bright!” he called to Mara.
The next sunrise, Gilda laid another shining golden egg. Mara clapped softly. “One golden egg, warm and bright!”
Each morning brought one golden egg, which Ben and Mara traded for coins. But Ben frowned; he wanted the little row to grow faster.
Soon Ben’s impatience turned to greed. He stared at Gilda’s round belly and wondered if all the gold was hidden inside.
Ben leaned close to Mara with a foolish plan. “We can open Gilda and take all the gold at once,” he whispered.
At once, Mara stepped between Ben and the frightened goose. “Stop! Gilda could be hurt, and we could lose her.”
Ben lowered his hands because Mara’s warning reached his heart. “One golden egg, warm and bright,” he said quietly.
So Mara left the barn door open while Ben scattered corn. He promised to care for Gilda patiently.
The next morning, Gilda rested safely beside one new golden egg. Ben and Mara smiled without asking for more.
That night, Gilda tucked her head beneath her soft wing. Be thankful for small gifts that come each day.
